How to play mahjong solitaire

Mahjong solitaire, also spelled mahjongg or mah-jong, is a calm puzzle for one player. The goal is to take every tile off the board. Tap two tiles that show the same picture and they disappear. You can only pick a tile that is free, which means nothing lies on top of it and its left or right side is open.

Tiles that are not free look slightly dimmer. If you tap one, the tiles that hold it down light up for a moment, so you can see what to clear first.

Levels and layouts

Every level has its own layout, and the boards get taller and trickier as you go: tiles are stacked in several layers, so the ones on top hide the ones underneath. Look at the whole stack before you start and plan which pairs to open up first.

Tips for clearing the board

Start with the tallest stacks, because everything underneath stays locked until they are gone. Before you take a pair, glance at the other copies of that picture: a match that uncovers nothing new can often wait. When no move jumps out at you, press hint. If there really are no moves left, shuffle deals the tiles that remain again, and undo takes your last pair back.

Daily board, stars and backdrops

A new daily board appears every day. Finish it to grow your streak. Stars come from speed: clear a level quickly to earn three, and a handful of stars unlocks a new backdrop for your game. You can leave in the middle of a board and come back to it later.

Questions

Is mahjong solitaire free to play here?

Yes. It is free, there is nothing to download and you do not need an account. Your stars and streak are saved automatically.

Is this the same as the four player game of mahjong?

Not quite. Mahjong solitaire only borrows the tiles. It is a puzzle for one player where you match pairs, and the rules on this page are all you need.

How do you win mahjong solitaire?

You win by taking every tile off the board. Match two free tiles with the same picture, one pair after another, and plan ahead so the tiles on the lower layers do not get stuck.

Is there a daily mahjong solitaire puzzle?

Yes. A new daily board appears every day, the same for everyone that day. Finish it to grow your streak.

Is there a cute, aesthetic mahjong game?

Yes, this one. Instead of the classic suits, the tiles show small pastel pictures on a dreamy backdrop, and the stars you earn unlock new backdrops. It is made to feel like a cozy little game.

Is there a time limit?

No. Stars reward speed, but nothing runs out, so you can take your time and think.

Can every board be finished?

Yes. Every board can be cleared. If a pair you take leads to a dead end, shuffle or undo gets you back on track.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. It works on phones, tablets and computers, and you play with simple taps or clicks. You can leave at any time and continue later.
